Cause and Effect Example

CORROSION

In general, corrosion is the destruction of metal objects due to environmental influences. The corrosion process can be explained electrochemically, for example in the process of ironing which forms iron oxide (F2O3.nH2O). Electrochemically, the process of ironing is an iron oxidation event of iron by oxygen from the air.

Corrosion can also be interpreted as an attack that damages the metal because the metal reacts chemically or electrochemically with the environment. There is another definition which says that corrosion is the opposite of a metal extraction process from its mineral ore. For example, iron ore minerals in the wild are present in the form of iron oxide or iron sulphide compounds, after extracting and treating, an iron will be produced for the manufacture of steel or alloy steel. During use, the steel will react with the environment causing corrosion (back to the iron oxide compound).

For iron metal is left open in the yard for a month, since that the color of iron metal changes become red. It can happen because corrosion occurs through a redox reaction, in which the metal undergoes oxidation, while the oxygen is reduced. The metal rust is generally oxide or carbonate. Rust on iron is a brown-red substance with the chemical formula Fe2O3 · xH2O. The iron oxide (rust) can peel. Corrosion as a whole is an electrochemical process. In iron corrosion, certain parts of iron as anode, where iron undergoes oxidation. The iron (II) ions formed on the anode will oxidize to form iron (III) which then form the hydrated oxide compound Fe2O3 · xH2O called rust.

Anode  : Fe(s) → Fe2+(aq) + 2e-
Katode : O2(g) + 4H+(aq) + 4e- → 2H2O(l)

Dialogue

Zelvy   : Hi dara! I left an iron metal in my yard over a month
Dara    : Really?
Zelvy   : Yeah, So what will happen after those week pass?
Dara    : I think the color of the iron metal will changes become red
Zelvy   : Why?
Dara    : It's call corrosion, corrosion occurs through a redox reaction, in which the metal undergoes oxidation, while the oxygen is reduced.
Zelvy    : How did you know that?
Dara     : Just reading my chemistry book

Cause     :  Iron metal is left open in the yard for a month
Effect       :  The color of iron metal changes become red

    1. 1) Coating process
Iron is coated with a substance that is difficult to penetrate oxygen. This is done by painting or coating with a metal that is difficult to oxidize. The metal used is a metal located to the right of iron in a voltaic series (a more negative reduction potential of iron). For example: silver, gold, platinum, lead, and nickel metal.
      2) Protocol cathode process (cathodic protection)
Iron is protected from corrosion by placing iron as a cathode, not as anode. Thus the iron is connected to other easily oxidized metals, the metal to the left of iron in the voltaic series (metal with a more positive reduction potential of iron).

    1. Corrosion is an electrochemical process or reaction that is natural and continuous by itself, therefore corrosion can not be prevented or stopped completely. Corrosion can only be controlled or slowed down the lajunyase thus slowing down its destructive process.
Viewed from the electrochemical aspect, corrosion is the process of transferelektron from metal to the environment. The metal acts as a cell providing an electron (anode) and its environment as an electron (cathode) receiver. The reaction that occurs in corrosive metals is oxidation, in which metal atoms dissolve into their environment by releasing electrons in the metal. As for the cathode reaction occurs, where the ions from the environment approach the metal and capture the electrons-
      Electrons left on the metal.

    1. Because corrosion can be prevented by turning iron into stainless steel (stainless steel). Furthermore Painting Bridges, fences, and railings are usually painted. Paint avoids the contact of iron with air and water. Oil Spreads or Greases applied to a variety of tools and machines. Oil and grease prevents iron contact with water
